Chapter 7: Commerce

Commerce in my opinion is the next biggest event since agriculture. It single handedly created worldwide relationships between multiple countries. The Silk Road is one example of how countries across Eurasia formed connections through trade and by doing this, they grew their own communities. Goods themselves were more complex than before, and now people cared to receive luxury items rather than just tools. This is one of the first times that materialism is introduced to society and the introduction of business/entrepreneurship. Products became more complex and quality of goods were taken more seriously. Jewelry, furs, bamboos, paper, slaves, gold, glass and medicines crossed along the Silk Road and this became the introduction of globalization through trade. Trade also put more of an emphasis on transportation. Transportation became more vital to being successful, so many inventions spawned from getting people and their products to another place. Art is another addition to globalization because it would spread along the Silk Road and in a weird way, business became a form of productive war. Countries were promoting themselves through business, creating relationships and trying to show that they had the most prosperous countries. This is interestingly the birth of a new meaning of prosperity. Agricultural success and how much a place conquered dictated how successful they were but now there’s a whole new way to achieve success. Greed also grows as success becomes redefined by capitalism. Ownership means power and socioeconomic division became more solidified, although Many jobs were created so opportunity grew. Faith and beliefs spread a lot more through trade as well. Christian churches relied on Islamic trading networks and on silks manufactured in the Muslim world. China focused on production more than agriculture at some points just so they could compete for the market within the Silk Road. Exploration also became popular as people aimed to become merchants which changed who traveled and what they were doing when they did reach new places.
